Puppets

I have been making puppets from scraps of whatever I could find since I was young.

The power puppets can hold fascinates me — the way objects without breath can come alive in knowing hands, and how a degree of separation from human actors can amplify and change the way stories are told and received. I truly believe that theatre can make a difference. It can reveal what is hidden, amplify quiet voices, and speak difficult truths. I have chosen puppetry as my story-telling form because I believe that puppets are the perfect marriage between theatre and art. Each carefully measured movement, each turn of the head, holds more weight than our clumsy human bodies ever could. I love puppetry because, with it, our wildest dreams and darkest nightmares can come alive. Animals speak, witches wander, and ghosts are seen.

Experience

At Double Edge Theatre in Ashfield, Massachusetts, I spent three months as their design intern, creating, repurposing, and operating puppets for their outdoor summer spectacle.

At Rough House Theatre in Chicago, I assisted in devising an immersive puppet-theatre haunted house, as well as helped build puppets, dress the set, and source props for the show. I went on to serve as an assistant for their virtual puppetry-mechanics workshops.
